Who we are, what we’re doing—

Algiers Point Pollinators was dreamt up by Algiers Point resident, Gina Pea, noting the absence of helpful bugs in her home vegetable garden. After attempting to attract more bees & butterflies herself, she realized that her success relied on the cooperation of her neighbors to create a continuous pollinator habitat throughout their neighborhood. We hope to take what we learn here and use it as a model to bring more native plants and the pollinators they support to every neighborhood in New Orleans.

APP is a project of Messages from the Mississippi, a local non-profit who works to promote environmental education as well as a sense of responsibility & ownership towards our natural world. Algiers Point Pollinators with Messages from the Mississippi will be creating curriculum, workshops & an educator’s toolkit for teaching kids how to identify, observe & nurture our native ecosystems within an urban environment.

We’d like to thank the the Mayor’s Neighborhood Enrichment Office for providing funding & support for the Eliza Street Pollinator Corridor.
